How Encryption Protects Your Notes

When you create a note on SneakNote, the content is encrypted directly in your browser using strong cryptographic algorithms before it is transmitted to the server. The encryption key is embedded in the generated link fragment, which is never sent to the server. This means the server stores only encrypted data that it cannot decrypt. Only the person who receives the link possesses the key needed to read the original content.

This approach is known as client-side encryption. Unlike services that encrypt data "at rest" on their servers, where the provider holds the keys and can technically access your content, client-side encryption ensures that the plaintext never exists anywhere except in the sender's and recipient's browsers.

How It Works

1. Type your message or sensitive data into the form below.
2. The content is encrypted in your browser before being sent to the server.
3. You receive a unique link containing the decryption key in the URL fragment.
4. The recipient opens the link, the note is decrypted in their browser, and the server deletes the encrypted data.

Beyond Basic Encryption

SneakNote combines encryption with two additional layers of protection. First, notes are self-destructing: once read, the encrypted data is permanently removed from the server, eliminating the risk of future breaches exposing old content. Second, you can add a passphrase that the recipient must provide before decryption occurs, protecting against unauthorized access even if the link is intercepted.

Together, these features create a communication channel where privacy is enforced by mathematics and system design, not by policy or promises. There is no account to hack, no message archive to subpoena, and no server-side key that could be compromised. The encrypted note exists only as long as it is needed, and only for the person it was intended for.
