What Happens to Your Data When You Use Messaging Apps?
Billions of messages are sent every day through apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, and Slack. Most users assume their conversations are private. The reality is more complicated. Even when message content is encrypted, the platforms collect substantial amounts of data about you.
How Major Messaging Apps Handle Your Data
WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption for message content, meaning Meta cannot read your messages in transit. However, WhatsApp collects extensive metadata: who you message, when, how often, your IP address, device information, location data, and your entire contact list. This metadata is shared with Meta's broader advertising infrastructure. Backups to Google Drive or iCloud are not end-to-end encrypted by default, meaning your message history can be accessed by those cloud providers.
Telegram
Standard Telegram chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Messages are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, but Telegram holds the decryption keys and can read your messages. Only "Secret Chats" use end-to-end encryption, and these are not enabled by default. Group chats are never end-to-end encrypted. Telegram stores messages on its servers indefinitely to enable multi-device syncing.
iMessage
Apple's iMessage provides end-to-end encryption between Apple devices. However, if iCloud Backup is enabled, your message history is stored in iCloud with keys that Apple controls, meaning Apple can access those messages if compelled by law enforcement. Messages sent to non-Apple devices fall back to SMS, which has no encryption at all.
Slack
Slack does not offer end-to-end encryption. Messages are encrypted in transit and at rest, but Slack and your workspace administrators can access all messages, including DMs. Enterprise plans include compliance exports that allow organizations to export complete message histories. Slack retains messages according to your workspace's retention policy, which defaults to keeping everything forever.
The Metadata Problem
Even when message content is encrypted, metadata tells a detailed story. Knowing that you messaged a lawyer at 2 AM, contacted a recruiter three times this week, or exchanged messages with a journalist reveals information that can be just as sensitive as the messages themselves. Metadata is routinely collected by messaging platforms and is frequently requested by law enforcement.
A 2024 study by the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that metadata alone can be used to infer relationships, habits, political affiliations, and health conditions with surprising accuracy.
Data Retention: Messages That Never Disappear
Most messaging apps retain your data far longer than you might expect. Slack workspaces on free plans keep the last 90 days of messages, while paid plans can retain everything indefinitely. WhatsApp stores undelivered messages on its servers for up to 30 days. Telegram stores all non-secret-chat messages on its servers with no published deletion timeline.
This means that a sensitive message you sent years ago may still exist on a server somewhere, potentially accessible through data breaches, legal discovery, or platform policy changes.
The Case for Ephemeral Communication
Not every message needs to live forever. When you are sharing something sensitive -- a password, a private thought, confidential feedback, or financial information -- the safest approach is to use a channel that destroys the message after it has been read.
Ephemeral messaging eliminates the risks of long-term data retention, reduces your exposure in the event of a platform breach, and ensures that sensitive information does not sit in searchable archives indefinitely.
A Different Approach to Sensitive Messages
